Chapter 1

Ithaca, New York, three years ago.

“Dad, how is your invention coming along? I hear it is supposed to control both fire and rain.”

Reiko’s voice carried across the backyard, bright and teasing, the way it always did when she wanted to poke her father into talking. Ravi looked up from the grill, a pair of tongs in one hand and a halfmarinated portobello mushroom in the other.

“Invention?” he said, shaking his head with a modest smile. “It is hardly that. More like an idea I have been wrestling with for two years. No clear path forward yet. Which is why”—he gestured broadly at the gathering-

“I’m hoping all this assembled brain power will bail me out.”

The backyard was alive with the familiar chaos of a Kumar family reunion. The lateafternoon sun cast a warm glow over the lawn, and the air carried the scent of grilling vegetables, sunscreen, and the faint sweetness of the lilac bushes that had just begun to bud as spring knocked at the door of Lake Cayuga, the home of Cornell and the Materials and Climate Research Institute.

It had been almost two years since all three daughters were able to coordinate their schedules and descend on the Ithaca home where they had grown up.

Lilly, Sita, and Reiko moved through the yard with the ease of people returning to a place stitched into their bones.

Lilly, the eldest, stood near the patio table helping Mira and little Emma arrange napkins and plastic cups.

Sita lounged in a lawn chair, sunglasses perched on her head, pretending not to listen while very much listening.

And Reiko — five minutes younger than her twin but infinitely more mischievous — hovered near her father, eager to pry open whatever secret he was hiding.

Today was not just a reunion. It was a convergence of generations, partners, children, and ideas — the kind of gathering where laughter mixed with scientific curiosity, and where Ravi Kumar often found the spark for his greatest breakthroughs.

Lilly had arrived first, as she usually did, with Jesse close behind carrying a tote bag full of snacks, sunscreen, and whatever emergency supplies a NASA scientist believed necessary for a simple backyard cookout.

Mira darted ahead of them, already barefoot, already exploring, while little Emma clung shyly to Lilly’s leg, wideeyed at her first visit to her grandparents’ home.

Ravi watched them with a quiet smile.

Mira had grown tall and confident, her curiosity boundless.

Emma, five years younger, was still discovering the world one cautious step at a time. Seeing them together always reminded him how quickly time moved.

Sita had arrived next, alone, sunglasses perched on her head and a faintly defensive expression on her face — the kind she wore whenever she anticipated questions.

She hugged her parents warmly but kept her explanations brief. Yes, she was seeing someone.

Yes, it was serious.

No, she was not ready to bring him home yet.

And no, Dad, that wasn’t an invitation to interrogate her.

Ravi chuckled. Sita had always been direct, the twin with sharper edges and a quicker tongue.

Reiko, on the other hand, floated into the yard with her fiancé, John Anderson Jr., in tow. John looked slightly overdressed for a cookout, but his earnest smile made up for it.

He shook Ravi’s hand with genuine respect — the kind of respect born not just from meeting a future fatherinlaw, but from meeting the man whose invention had changed his industry.

They had met at the Conscious Capitalist Conference two years earlier, where Ravi had demonstrated CRAPS — the carbonrecapture system that had become a global sensation. John, heir to a Texas oil dynasty, had been skeptical at first. But by the end of the demonstration, he had become one of CRAPS’ most vocal champions.

Reiko often joked that she fell in love with John because he fell in love with her father’s invention. John never denied it.

Now, standing in the backyard surrounded by the Kumar clan, he looked both proud and humbled — as though he understood he was stepping into a family where science, love, and loud opinions were all equally sacred.

The cookout was no longer just a meal. It was a reunion of minds, generations, and stories — the perfect setting for an idea waiting to be born.

Sita leaned forward in her lawn chair, pushing her sunglasses up onto her head. “So, Dad, are you actually going to tell us this idea, or are you planning to torture us all afternoon?”

Ravi laughed, waving his tongs like a conductor’s baton.

“Patience, Sita. As Reiko said, the idea is meant to control both fire and rain. Now—” he paused dramatically, sweeping his hand across the group,

“—what’s the single most important thing you need to fight fire?”

Before any adult could answer, Mira piped up from the patio table where she was arranging napkins with Emma. “Rain!” she declared proudly.

Ravi pointed at her with exaggerated approval. “Exactly! Rain. My brilliant granddaughter already knows.”

Mira beamed, and Emma looked up at her sister as though she had just solved a cosmic mystery.

“Now,” Ravi continued, “I am sure all of you have at least heard of cloud seeding. If not, you can look it up later. I promise not to bore you with a lecture.”

“Dad,” Lilly said gently, “cloud seeding is not very dependable. Isn’t that the whole problem?”

Ravi nodded. “Yes. Exactly. It works sometimes, but not consistently. And when you are trying to stop a wildfire, ‘sometimes’ isn’t good enough.”

Jesse stepped closer, folding his arms thoughtfully. “Scientists at NASA, NOAA, and half a dozen universities have been wrestling with that issue for years. If you have found a way to make cloud seeding predictable…”

“Revolutionary,” Caitlyn finished, teasing but sincere.

Ravi grinned. “Well, I am not claiming victory yet. But I do have an idea. And I want all of you to help me poke holes in it.”

The family leaned in — even Emma, who did not understand the science but sensed the excitement. The backyard suddenly felt less like a cookout and more like a brainstorming lab disguised with lawn chairs and lemonade.

“Here’s the thing,” Ravi said, lowering his voice as though sharing a secret. “Cloud seeding alone will not cut it. We need a way to move air — a lot of air — to the right altitude. And we need to do it precisely.”

Reiko raised an eyebrow. “Dad… are you about to bring up drones again?”

Caitlyn laughed. “He has been obsessed with UAVs – the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, for two years. Of course he is.”

Ravi shrugged, smiling. “Well, yes. But this time, I promise it is for a good reason.”

He set down his beer bottle and clapped his hands once, as if beginning a class. “Alright, team. Let us start simple. Who remembers what happens to air temperature as you go higher in altitude?”

The daughters exchanged glances. Sita shrugged. Reiko smirked. Mira raised her hand even though she did not know the answer.

Lilly finally spoke. “It decreases.”

Jesse nodded approvingly. “About one degree Fahrenheit per three hundred feet, give or take.”

Ravi pointed at them both. “Exactly. The higher you go, the colder the air gets — at least up to around thirtyfive thousand feet. And colder air is important because…”

He paused, waiting.

No one answered.

Caitlyn rolled her eyes dramatically. “Because you are trying to make rain, Ravi. And to make rain, you need condensation. Get on with it, will you?”

“Yes!” Ravi said, delighted. “Condensation. The water in the air is already there — but it is in vapor form. Invisible. Mixed with oxygen and nitrogen like a happy little gas cocktail.”

Emma giggled at the word “cocktail,” even though she did not know what it meant.

“So,” Ravi continued, “if we want that vapor to turn into droplets — actual rain — we need to give it a reason. Water does not just decide to fall out of the sky. It needs help.”

“A nucleus,” Reiko said, lifting her chin proudly. “A tiny particle for the water to cling to. Dust, ice, silver bromide — anything small enough to function as a seed.”

“Correct again,” Ravi said. “We need nuclei. Cloud seeding uses silver iodide or similar particles. But that’s only part of the story.”

He leaned forward, lowering his voice as though sharing a secret. “The real trick is getting the air to the right temperature. You can seed clouds all day long, but if the air is not cold enough, nothing happens.”

John, who had been listening intently, finally spoke. “So, you need to move the air.”

Ravi snapped his fingers. “Exactly! Move the air.

Lift it to higher altitudes where it is cooler.

Give the vapor a chance to condense around the nuclei.”

Reiko crossed her arms. “Oh dear, this is where he brings up drones again, isn’t it?”

Caitlyn laughed. “He has been obsessed with them. He probably dreams about them.”

Ravi shrugged, grinning. “Well, yes. I love these little flying birds.”

The family leaned in again — even Emma, who was now sitting on Mira’s lap, eyes wide.

The backyard had officially transformed into a classroom, a laboratory, an incubator, and a brainstorming arena — the birthplace of an idea that would soon become FARCE.

Mira, who had been listening with surprising focus for a sevenyearold, tugged at Ravi’s sleeve. “Grandpa… you said it controls rain. But what about floods?”

Ravi smiled at her earnestness. “Ah, yes. Floods. For that, we do the opposite of what we do to make rain.”

Sita groaned. “Dad, please don’t start another physics quiz.”

Caitlyn nudged her. “Let him have his fun. It keeps him young.”

Ravi shot them both a mock glare. “As I was saying before being rudely interrupted…”

Reiko snorted. “You love it.”

“Yes, I do,” Ravi admitted. “Now — to reduce rainfall, we move air downward to lower altitudes where the temperature is warmer.

Warm air holds more moisture, so less of it condenses into rain.”

Jesse nodded thoughtfully. “So, you’d vaporize some of the moisture before it falls.”

“Exactly. And then,” Ravi continued,

“we pull that air into the UAV, spin it in an onboard centrifuge, remove some of the nuclei, and eject the cleaned air back out.

Less nuclei means less condensation.

Voila, less condensation means less rain.”

John leaned forward. “I’ve never heard anyone propose that.”

“Neither have I,” Jesse said. “And I have been in this business for a long time. But it is logically sound.”

Ravi exhaled, relieved. “Good. Because I was not sure if I was being brilliant or ridiculous.”

“Both,” Caitlyn said sweetly.

“Mostly ridiculous,” Sita added.

“Entirely brilliant,” Reiko countered, bumping her father’s shoulder.

Ravi opened his mouth to continue —

— when a sudden shriek cut through the backyard.

Emma, perched on a tiny plastic chair, pointed upward with both hands. “LOOK! LOOK THERE!”

Everyone turned.

A massive flock of Canada geese — hundreds of them — swept across the sky in a perfect Vformation, wings beating in rhythmic unison.

The warm March air shimmered around them as they headed north, earlier than usual, riding the rising thermals like seasoned pilots.

“Whoa,” Mira whispered.

“They’re beautiful,” Lilly said softly.

Jesse shaded his eyes. “They are riding a stable updraft. Probably the early warm front.”

But Ravi was not listening.

He stared at the geese — at the formation, the coordination, and the collective movement of air they generated. His mind snapped into alignment.

“That’s it,” he whispered. Then louder: “THAT’S IT!”

He jumped to his feet, nearly knocking over his beer. “Emma, you genius!”

Emma squealed again, delighted to be called a genius even though she had no idea why and what it meant.

Reiko blinked. “Dad… it’s just birds.”

“No,” Ravi said, breathless. “It is the answer. I have been agonizing for months about how to move enough air — not just a little column, but a massive volume. Enough to change weather behavior.”

He pointed at the sky. “We do not need one UAV.

We need a flock.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

Flying in formation.

Blanketing the area like those geese.

Their combined updraft or downdraft would move enormous quantities of air.”

Jesse’s eyes widened. “A distributed aerodynamic system…”

“Exactly!” Ravi said. “A coordinated swarm. A flock of drones acting like a single atmospheric engine.”

Caitlyn shook her head in awe. “You just turned birds into a climatecontrol blueprint.”

The excitement in the backyard was still buzzing when Sita suddenly sat up straighter, eyes gleaming with mischief.

“Alright, Dad. If this thing is real, it needs a name. How about… FARCE?”

Reiko groaned dramatically a little miffed at not coming up with the name herself – normally her domain.

“Oh no. Not another acronym.”

“Fire And Rain Control Equipment,” Sita said proudly, tapping each word on her fingers. “FARCE. It is perfect.”

Reiko raised an eyebrow. “It sounds like a joke.”

“Most great inventions do at first,” Caitlyn teased.

Lilly, who rarely weighed in unless she meant it, nodded once. “I like it.”

That settled it.

Ravi threw his hands up in surrender. “FARCE it is. The Kumar family has spoken.”

The group laughed, but beneath the humor was a shared sense of awe — they all knew something extraordinary had just taken shape.

Ravi looked around at his daughters, his sonsinlaw, his grandchildren. “Now I need help. Real help. This idea is bigger than me.”

Jesse stepped forward first. “You will have it. I want to run atmospheric models, stresstest the physics, and see how feasible the swarm concept is. NASA has simulation tools we can tap into.”

Caitlyn nudged Ravi with her shoulder. “And you know I am in. If you are building a coordinated swarm of UAVs, you will need AI — formation control, collision avoidance, adaptive routing. That is my playground.”

John cleared his throat. “I have contacts in the military — people working on nextgeneration UAV platforms. They might be willing to collaborate, especially if this has nationalsecurity implications.

And… well… anything that helps CRAPS scale is good for all of us.”

Ravi felt his chest tighten — not with fear, but with gratitude. “Thank you. All of you.”

Mira tugged his sleeve. “Grandpa, can I help too?”

Before Ravi could answer, Emma jumped in. “Me too! I saw the birds!”

The family burst into laughter.

Ravi scooped Emma into his arms and kissed her cheek. “Yes, sweetheart. You helped more than you know.”

He looked up at the sky where the geese had flown moments earlier, the formation already fading into the horizon.

“This is it,” he said softly. “The beginning.”

And the backyard — once just a place for cookouts, laughter, and family reunions — had become the birthplace of FARCE, the invention that would change the world.
